Today's riddle: What has a cap but no head? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Admiral Maltings announces final days, an Emeryville food truck shutters, and Alborz closes Berkeley location (oaklandside.org) — Several Alameda favorites are changing fast: Admiral Maltings and its Rake taproom are ending production and closing this month, while Gong Cha and Peppermint Baguette appear temporarily shuttered for remodeling. The roundup also notes other East Bay restaurant closures, but Alameda residents will feel the impact most at West End, Park Street, and Santa Clara Avenue spots.
2. Alameda Police Release Pink Patch To Benefit Breast Cancer Nonprofit (patch.com) — Alameda residents can support breast cancer services by buying this year's $10 Pink Patch from the Alameda Police Department's front counter, with cash only and limited supplies through October. Proceeds benefit the HERS Breast Cancer Foundation in Fremont, and officers will also be handing out free Pink Patch stickers around town while they last.
3. Bayview Shoreline Bird Sanctuary Approved But Never Built (alamedapost.com) — Alameda's long-promised Bayview Shoreline Bird Sanctuary was approved in the late 1980s to fix illegal shoreline encroachments and create new habitat, but the core restoration work was never built. The city did add two observation decks, yet funding delays and the Great Recession pushed the larger project off the books. With renewed concern over Bayview Drive encroachments, this forgotten plan is resurfacing as a key piece of shoreline and public-access history.
4. Admiral Maltings Closing Affects More Than Alameda Point (alamedapost.com) — Admiral Maltings and its taproom The Rake at Alameda Point are closing this month, taking away a beloved local hangout and key supplier for Alameda breweries and distillers across Northern California. Local brewers, city officials, and neighbors describe how the shutdown will raise costs, change recipes, and leave a big hole in Spirits Alley's draw for residents and visitors.
5. Alameda: What were the best deals for residential properties sold the week of Aug. 31? (mercurynews.com) — If you're watching Alameda's housing market, last week's recorded sales ranged from a $396,000 Otis Drive condo to a $950,000 three-bedroom on Mangrove Lane, all well below the city's $1.5 million average. The piece breaks down prices, sizes, and dates so locals can gauge current neighborhood values.
