Mi’Chelle Fredrick works primarily in graphite and watercolor. She is also an accomplished photographer. Her work has been exhibited widely throughout the Bay Area and the Midwest. In addition to her work as a professional artist Mi’Chelle owns her own design practice, serving commercial and residential clients. She also teaches painting and drawing at the Mastick Senior Center in Alameda, CA.


Looking Back… by Mi’Chelle Fredrick will be on display until November 14, 2026.
Her work can be viewed in the Lobby, Game Room and Music room.
A Reception, open to the public, will be held in the Mastick Lobby on Wednesday, September 30 at 11:00 a.m.

Join us at the Alameda Free Library for a free film screening of the documentary "Beyond the Bridge: A Solution to Homelessness."
BEYOND THE BRIDGE is an ambitious documentary film about solutions to homelessness. Filmmakers Don Sawyer and Tim Hashko traveled 44,000 miles around the US to answer this question: How can this country solve homelessness in a comprehensive way? The answer may surprise you with its simplicity, as two cities proved that solving homelessness is within the reach of all communities.
The film focuses on changing the national discourse on homelessness solutions, addressing the upstream causes of homelessness, and addressing the downstream via housing and robust supportive services in combination.
The film will be followed by a panel conversation.
Event will take place in the Stafford Room. Dinner and refreshments will be provided.

The class starts with a slow flow that gradually transitions to yin yoga where each pose is held for 2-3 minutes, allowing for a deep release of tension in the body’s connective tissues such as ligaments, tendons, and fascia.
The slow pace of the transitions, combined with the long-held poses, creates a space for introspection and relaxation, making it ideal for releasing both physical and emotional tension.
The focus is on cultivating a mindful connection to the breath and sensations in the body, allowing practitioners to deepen their awareness with each movement and breath and to resent their nervous system.

She is an internationally acclaimed singer and that rare bird: a black trans vocal musician in the exceedingly straight jazz world.Born in 1942, she grew up in Detroit, Michigan, during the Golden Age of modern jazz. Always a lover of music, she did not, however, sing in public until she was 36, after working on a Chrysler assembly line and as a short-order cook, and earning a bachelor’s degree in painting from Wayne State University. Along the way, at age 26, she also underwent a new “male-to-female gender reassignment surgery” offered by the University of Michigan.Having studied with renowned bop pianist Barry Harris in New York, she migrated to Paris, where she remained for several years, performing and teaching at prestigious schools of music, various festivals, and venues such as The Duc des Lombards, The Sunset, New Morning, and a host of other establishments, winning the Django D’Or award for Best International Jazz Vocalist. In New York, she has performed in such famed venues as Wigstock, The Pyramid, Sweet Basil, The Blue Note, Jazzmania, and Barry Harris Jazz Cultural Theatre, among others. She is a sublime interpreter of the American and Brazilian songbook, performing in the classic jazz vocal tradition of Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, and Betty Carter. <h4>Earn your Junior Detective Badge at CHRS!</h4>
Juniors will learn how detectives and investigators use coded communication by exploring the history of Morse code and creating a custom beaded bracelet or keychain that spells out a secret message in dots and dashes. This hands-on activity strengthens observation, pattern recognition, and problem-solving skills while introducing participants to one of history’s earliest wireless communication systems. Juniors will earn and receive the Detective badge in this workshop.
Adult supervision is required onsite for the duration of the program. Troops must maintain GSNorCal’s required adult-to-girl ratio. Girls attending individually must have a parent or guardian remain onsite.
Parents and chaperones attending are welcome to join and attend free of charge and we hope you will participate in a complementary tour of the museum.
