On Thursday, September 27th, at 3:30, Alameda and Encinal High Schools will be co-hosting a cross-country meet at Crab Cove. The meet is this season's second Center Meet for the newly formed West Alameda County Conference (WACC) league. The new league includes twelve teams, including long-time Alameda/Encinal rivals Berkeley High and Bishop O'Dowd. Other schools competing on Thursday include Castro Valley, Mt. Eden, San Leandro, and San Lorenzo. Over 200 student-athletes are expected to compete.
Encinal's team received a big boost this season, as several ACLC runners joined coach Don Porteus's squad. Encinal competes at the Division III level in the North Coast Section. Alameda's boys team is coming off three straight trips to the State Meet, and is hoping to continue that trend in the NCS's Division II. The Hornet girls are hoping to make this year historic if they can also make it to State, as the boys and girls teams have never qualified in the same year.
The meet on Thursday will feature some spirited team competition in girls and boys varsity, but also in the junior varsity and frosh-soph divisions. The meet gets rolling promptly at 3:30 with the frosh-soph boys race. The frosh-soph girls will give the boys a 5-minute head start before starting their race at 3:35. The junior varsity divisions begin at 4:00, followed by the girls varsity race at 4:30 and the boys varsity race at 5:00.
