Bishop O'Dowd was determined to make the coaching debut of Hardy Nickerson a successful one — and there was no way that Alameda was going to prevent that.

The Hornets fell to the Dragons by a final of 59-10.

Believe it or not, the game got off to a great start for Alameda, as the Hornets caught O'Dowd off guard on the opening kickoff with an onside kick. Ryan Carlson fell on the ball and the Hornets were in business.

The Hornets were able to march to the Dragons' 21 in seven plays, but disaster struck on the next play when Alameda lineman Sam Rausser suffered an apparent broken leg and had to be taken off the field in an ambulance.

Alameda wasn't the same when play resumed following a 26-minute delay.

Alameda quarterback Tom Ruckman was intercepted on the game's next play by Chad Washington and O'Dowd drove 87 yards in 10 plays to go ahead 6-0 on Trent Trammell's 11 yard reception from quarterback Dominic Miroglio.

The Dragons then recovered an onside kick attempt of their own and again went on an impressive drive, this time going 63 yards in 11 plays, with Miroglio taking it in from six yards out for a 12-0 O'Dowd advantage.

Things went from bad to worse in the second quarter for Alameda as the Dragons enlarged their lead to 19-0 on Trammell's second score of the night, a seven-yard scamper.  Then after a Hornets' fumble, O'Dowd hit paydirt again, this time a Miroglio to T.J. King pass of 29 yards to increase the lead to 25-0.  The Dragons would find the endzone three more times before the half, the highlighted by King's second score of the night — a 62-yard bomb from Miroglio — and O'Dowd took a comfortable 46-0 lead into the break.

Alameda would get on the scoreboard in the third quarter, tackling Trammell in the endzone for a safety and later on a Ruckman touchdown run from 2-yards out.  But a comeback wasn't in the books for the Hornets on this afternoon, as O'Dowd backup quarterback Andy Carlson came in and threw two scores of his own, capping a convincing win for the Dragons.

Nickerson, who took over for longtime O'Dowd coach Paul Perenon was happy with the win.

"This was a good start for our kids," Nickerson said, "We were really anxious to get this season started, we are taking this one game at a time."

Hornets coach Steven Rochlin said his squad was determined to move on.

"I told our guys that this is pre-season game and we will put this behind us.  On a good note, we did get to play a lot of kids today."
