High School Musical Opens on Friday

TOMORROW YOUTH REPERTORY IN ASSOCIATION WITH ALAMEDA CHILDREN'S MUSICAL THEATRE PRESENTS HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL

The Wildly Popular Teen/Children’s Romantic Comedy Comes to Alameda

Alameda, CA, – Alameda’s Tomorrow Youth Repertory in association with Alameda Children’s Musical Theatre is proud to bring High School Musical to the Alameda stage.

The musical, High School Musical is based upon the 2006 smash hit Disney film, High School Musical. Described by the author and critics as a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, it became the most successful film that Disney Channel Original Movie ever produced. The film’s soundtrack was the best-selling album in the U.S. for 2006. Disney was quick to capitalize on its success, with not only sequels, High School Musical 2 and High School Musical 3: Senior Year, but also a concert tour, stage musical, ice show, reality show, video games, and book series.

The show opens with the first day after winter break at East High, and the jocks, brainiacs, thespians and skater dudes find their cliques and recount their vacations, looking forward to the new year. The plot follows two high school juniors from rival cliques, Troy Bolton, captain of the basketball team, and Gabriella Montez, a shy transfer student who excels in math and science. As they both try out for the leads in their high school musical, drama ensues with high school diva Sharpay Evans and her brother Ryan, doing their best to sabotage the friendship between Troy and Gabriella, resulting in a divide among the East High students. Resisting peer pressure and rivalry, and despite other students’ attempts to thwart their dreams, Troy and Gabriella discover their love of singing -- and each other, inspiring others not to “stick to the status quo.” This show has it all – rivalry, betrayal, suspense and a toe-tapping soundtrack.

TYR is pleased to welcome Director, Leah C. Gardner. “I am thrilled about this opportunity to share my passion for theatre with the talented children of TYR,” said Leah Gardner. “The themes of the show will certainly resonate with all school-aged children. Everyone can relate to courageously following your dreams against the pressure of the “status quo,” the importance of teamwork and of course, love.”

About Tomorrow Youth Repertory

Tomorrow Youth Repertory was started in the summer of 2011 when Jordan Best, Amy Marie Haven, and Tyler Null met to discuss joining forces to offer weekly youth theater classes and productions. Operating for the first year as a sub-program of Alameda Children’s Musical Theater, and then becoming an independent non-profit in 2012, Tomorrow Youth Rep has been tireless in its pursuit of youth theater opportunities, offering multiple classes and camps to serve all experience levels, and serving hundreds of students. Tomorrow Youth Repertory prides itself on its ability to offer a full theater experience for young actors, and for providing individual attention for every student — whether they have been acting and singing for ten years, or have never been on stage.
