Hummingbird Mid-Drink & Tongue Out: Photo Of The Day
A sharp eye and speedy shutter captured one of the rare images of these tiny birds.

ALAMEDA, CA — Merely being quick enough behind the camera to photograph a fast-flitting hummingbird can prove a challenge. So to capture an image, such as this one with a hummingbird's tongue out as it takes a sip, is quite a feat.
Submitted by Patch reader Joe Keiser, this shot was taken in an Alameda backyard near Crown Memorial State Beach.
As the tiny birds dart from flower to flower, they extend their tongues to gather nectar — quite a marvel of nature. (More info on that here.)
