Island Bowl on Friday Night: Jets vs. Hornets

Or Hornets vs. Jets ... whichever way you put it, the crosstown rivalry will heat up in the 58th annual football game between Alameda High and Encinal High.

The Encinal Jets travel across town to take on the host Alameda Hornets in the 58th annual Island Bowl football game Friday, Sept. 28. Kickoff is 4 p.m. for the JV teams and 7 p.m. for the varsity at Thompson Field, Alameda High School's home field at the corner of Walnut and Clement Streets (between Clement and Buena Vista Avenue).

Admission is $6 (per game) for adults, $4 for seniors and high school students, and $3 for grades K-8. No bills over $20 are accepted. BBQ, chili, pizza and other snacks will be available.

According to the Alameda Unified School District, since the first Island Bowl on Sept. 30, 1955 the Alameda Hornets have won “the Big Game” 30 times, the Encinal Jets have won 25 times and there have been two ties.
