Alameda’s backyard chicken population has grown steadily in recent years with more island families interested in keeping chickens for fresh eggs that are not factory-farmed and to provide natural bug control in the garden. Fido the dog and Fluffy the cat have local veterinary options, but what about Ms Cluck and her sister hens?
Meet Dr. Elinor Granzow from Alameda Pet Hospital who has a special interest in avian medicine and is fast becoming Alameda's very own "Chicken Doctor". She will give a free Happy Healthy Chickens talk on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Alameda See Spot Run, 2510 Santa Clara Avenue (next to Asena Restaurant).
Dr. Granzow will provide valuable tips on chicken health care plus live handling demos. According to Dr. Granzow, “Backyard chickens require thoughtful daily care like any beloved pet. But because hens produce an edible agricultural product for us to enjoy, it’s even more important to support their health at all stages of life.” Dr. Granzow recently joined Alameda Pet Hospital and attended veterinary school at UC Davis. She has worked as an emergency vet, in shelter medicine, and in general practice seeing dogs, cats, birds, reptiles and small mammals.
