Mandatory Commercial Recycling: Fines Now Being Issued

Businesses and multi-family buildings still in violation of the county's Mandatory Recycling Ordinance are receiving citation notices.

Fines are now being issued to businesses and multi-family properties in Alameda County that are still in violation of the Mandatory Recycling Ordinance that went into effect in July 2012. To date, over 100 citation notices have been served, and more are expected as routine inspections continue, according to the Alameda County Waste Management Authority.

Under the Ordinance, businesses and multi-family property owners are required to establish adequate recycling collection service and to separate recyclable and/or organic materials into the correct containers. In the City of Alameda, recycling and organics collection is mandatory for all businesses and multi-family buildings with five or more units.
