New Solar Program Approved in Alameda

Participants will still sell their excess energy, but the news "program minimizes cost shifting to non-participant customers."

ALAMEDA, CA — The City of Alameda's Public Utilities Board has approved a new solar energy program, Eligible Renewable Generation (ERG), the successor to the current net energy metering (NEM) program. The vote was 4 to 1, with Commissioner Ann McCormick dissenting, to approve the new program.

According to Alameda Municipal Power, "The ERG program minimizes cost shifting to non-participant customers and introduces an interconnect fee. Under the program, annual netting of energy generation and usage will no longer occur. Instead, actual meter reads will record usage and generation at normal meter interval periods."

Customers will pay regular rates for energy delivered to them by AMP. Customers will be compensated for their excess energy by receiving a bill credit for “received” energy delivered to AMP’s distribution grid.
