OAKLAND — One person died in a multi-vehicle crash early Monday on Interstate Highway 880 in Oakland, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The victim's name was not available early Monday afternoon from the Alameda County coroner's bureau.

The collision was reported about 3 a.m., when a Toyota RAV4 rear-ended a Honda Civic that was stopped in a southbound lane near 66th Avenue, CHP Officer David Arias said.

The driver of the Honda was outside his car after the crash and another vehicle hit him and kept going. The driver died at the scene and a passenger in his car was seriously injured.

A Nissan swerved to avoid the Honda and rolled over, but that driver wasn't injured. A Toyota Camry hit the Honda and moved to the right shoulder, Arias said. That driver also escaped injury.

Then a Toyota Corolla hit the deceased driver of the Honda. The driver of the Corolla pulled over and was uninjured.

Officers have made no arrests and alcohol does not appear to have played a role in the collision, Arias said.
