Port Sets Container Record In 2018
The all-time volume record had been set the previous year.

OAKLAND, CA — The Port of Oakland handled an all-time high volume of containers in 2018, breaking the record set just a year before, port officials said.
The port handled the equivalent of 2.55 million 20-foot containers last year, up 5.2 percent from the record set in 2017, according to the port.
Port officials attributed the record volume to factors such as the trade dispute between the U.S. and China that prompted shippers to accelerate import orders before anticipated tariffs take effect.

That import surge prompted a 19.7 percent increase in empty containers returned to origin destinations compared to 2017, according to the port.
"Last year was the busiest one ever at the port for a variety of reasons," Port of Oakland maritime director John Driscoll said in a news release. "Our objective now is to build on this performance to grow import and export volume."
