USS Hornet Opens Second Round of High School Internships
High School Internships, Volunteer Opportunities, Community Service

As the school year rapidly approaches the USS Hornet Sea, Air, & Space Museum opens up the internship application period for local high school students. Last year 10 teens spent their weekends, on a voluntary basis, aboard the World War II aircraft carrier as a member of the Live Aboard Overnight Program.
The Aircraft Carrier Hornet Foundation preserves and honors the legacy of USS Hornet, a National and State Historic Landmark, and its role in naval aviation history, the defense of our country, the Apollo Program, and exploration of space. The USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum connects the greatest generation of Americans with future generations, educating and inspiring them to meet the challenges they will face in the days to come. The goal of each of the Museum’s educational programs is to use our unique environment to teach science and history concepts in an interactive and fun manner and each program features a tour and hands-on activities. Overnight programs offer our guests:
- Sleep in restored berthing compartments where the real Hornet crew lived
- Enjoy dinner and breakfast in the Crew’s Mess
- Learn about this famous aircraft carrier’s daring exploits
- Explore the key areas in the ship and the historical naval aircraft on board
- Learn about NASA’s Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 space missions that put the first humans on the Moon
- Ride the Flight Simulator – experience what it’s like to catapult and fly from the carrier
- Earn a special crew member patch & certificate!
