Updated: Woman Rescued After Car Plunges into Bay

A 58-year-old woman was rescued near the San Leandro Marina this morning after she launched her car into the Bay. Police are saying it appears to have been an attempted suicide, and are holding the woman's name.

The  received several emergency calls around 8:45 a.m. this morning reporting that a Toyota Scion had plunged into the bay near  restaurant, according to police spokesperson Lt. Jeff Tudor. 

Officers arrived shortly thereafter and could see that a woman was in the driver's seat of the car, which was submerged up to the level of the steering wheel, Tudor said. 

One officer, Louie Guillen, took off his police belt and connected himself with a K-9 leash to two other officers on shore before heading into the water, Tudor said. The woman got herself out of the car through the open driver's side window, and the officers helped her to shore, according to police.

Rescue divers from the  also arrived at the scene and checked the car to make sure no one else was trapped inside. The Coast Guard was also present. 

The woman was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, Tudor said. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

The car was towed out of the water.
