AHS Senior Awarded $5,000 Scholarship

An Albany High School senior, Pasang Wangmo, has been chosen to receive a $5,000 Horatio Alger California Scholarship.

She is one of 35 students in Northern California to receive the award, in addition to five students from Southern California, according to news releases this past week from the scholarship sponsor, the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans.

The recipients "have been chosen based on their demonstrated commitment to education, dedication to community service, and strength of character in overcoming personal obstacles to achieve academic excellence," the announcement said.

The scholarships "are made possible with generous support from the Carlyse and Arthur Ciocca Charitable Foundation in Northern California," said the announcement for the Northern California winners.

The association has awarded $6,563,700 in scholarships to California high school seniors since 1984, according to the announcement.

"The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans is dedicated to the simple but powerful belief that hard work, honesty and determination can conquer all obstacles," the association says on its website.

Horatio Alger was a prolific writer of popular dime novels in the late 1800s that featured rags-to-riches stories of impoverished youths in large cities demonstrating strong moral character and perserverance to overcome great adversity to achieve wealth and fame.
