Albany Historical Society Dedicates Garbage Wars Plaque

A group of children and adults gathered on the corner of San Pablo and Buchanan on June 2 to dedicate the Albany Historical Society’s latest plaque which commemorates Albany’s Garbage Wars.  We were so fortunate to have Marin School students share part of their play with us depicting the women protesting the dumping of Berkeley’s trash in what was to become Ocean View.

Local historian Karen Sorenson told attendees how the women physically stopped the trucks from getting through to their trash site and how this event was the impetus for the incorporation of the City of Ocean View.

For a more complete explanation of the “garbage wars” including a photo of the April 2, 1908 San Francisco Examiner please see our website, http://albanycahistory.org/id15.html

The Albany Historical Society presented Marin School teacher Karen Fox-Reynolds with a certificate recognizing her work keeping Albany history alive through the 3rd grade play she produces each year.

Thank you to all who attended especially the young actors and actresses.  You made or dedication very special.
