Can I Be Frank? Albany Middle School ensemble, more than Jr. performance of Fiddler on the Roof

Musical play review

Thursday evening, Albany Middle School students performed Fiddler on the Roof Jr. in the Little Theater, located in Albany High School. Amy Penney directed the musical, with help from Lisa Leibow as her assistant. The performance was outstanding in every aspect, and if there were Tony awards given for middle school musicals, Fiddler and the ensemble, would be serious contenders.

Opening night jitters for the young cast and crew didn’t appear to affect their performance. Kai Weiner, in the role of Tevye, the milkman trying to protect his daughters and his way of life from a changing world, was well-rehearsed both in script and song, as were all the cast members. The story was as timely as it was entertaining. It was a challenge to remember the performers were only middle school age, as their presentation was robust, professional and flawless. The acting was well rehearsed, the songs were well sung, and the choreography was fluid, especially given the small space on stage. The crew flawlessly moved sets in and out throughout the show, and the set designs were nothing less than professional looking. Clio Petty played the Fiddler and gave an outstanding performance, mimicking the original soundtrack with her instrumental talent. According to Penney, she chose this musical because of its relevance toward our country’s political climate. However, this choice was particularly relevant to the Albany community, given the recent press. The performance reflects the hard work of Penney and Leibow, while providing a more positive representation of the Albany community.

One might say that if you’re looking for a little taste of theater, without traveling far or over a bridge, the Fiddler performance would fill that need. But Fiddler is more than a little taste of theater. It’s a five-course banquet!
