Albany Police Activities League Girls Rock! Big Success

The Albany Police Activities League (APAL) recently complete our summer session of Girls Rock! This program is a collaboration of APAL and the Albany Y and focuses on building self-esteem, developing a sense of empowerment, and encouraging self-expression. The theme of this summer’s camp was “friendship” with the girls exploring what it means to be a friend.

During the two week session the girls made various art projects, including a chain of strength, collages depicting the qualities of a good friend, and drawings illustrating their personal friendship characteristics. All of the young women were very open in our discussions of what makes a good friend – each one bringing their own unique perspective to the program.

Especially enjoyable were the two field trips taken during the session.  The first week found us at Bridges Rock Gym for climbing and slack lining.  The program ended with an afternoon of swimming at Albany Pool and then pizza in Memorial Park.
