Vaccine News and United Against Hate Week

Dear Albany Community,

"The big news this week was the FDA’s approval of a low-dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children from five to eleven years old. This is a great step forward for our schools!

Vaccinations for Children Five to Eleven Years Old

In addition to all that you may have read or heard in the news, the Alameda County Superintendent of Schools, L. K. Monroe, put out a useful statement about the vaccine. It states that the sources of the 5–11 year old vaccine will be as follows:

1. Primary Care Providers: Pediatricians and health care providers
2. Community Clinics: City-based and community-based clinics
3. County/State Clinics: County and state-run clinics at school sites supported by ACPHD and California Department of Public Health… School districts may also be partnering with community-based organizations and retail pharmacies to bring vaccines to school sites.

Healthcare providers, including Kaiser, Sutter Health, and Stanford Health Care, are scheduling appointments for children ages 5–11 now. MyTurn California is an excellent resource for finding vaccine appointments. CVS and Walgreens are also scheduling now, and Safeway has indicated they will begin soon. We are working with partners to explore hosting a local clinic, and you will be informed as more information becomes available.

United Against Hate Week

Since 2018, Albany has set aside a week to proudly declare that our community is united against hate. This year, United Against Hate Week is November 14–20 and is being celebrated jointly by the Albany Unified School District, the City of Albany, the Albany YMCA, the Albany Library, and University of California at Berkeley’s University Village. There are multiple ways to celebrate and to take action against hate in our community. Here are three:

• Come to see Bay Area author Belinda Hernández Arriaga! This event will kick off with Ms. Hernández Arriaga reading from her children's book, Love and Monsters in Sofia's Life, (recommended for children from 6–12 years old). After the children leave for games and pizza, an adult discussion about immigration reform, focused on family separations, will be led by Ms. Hernández Arriaga. Thursday, November 18, 2021. Read-aloud from 5:30 – 6:00 pm. Immigration Reform Discussion from 6:00–7:00 pm. University Village Recreation Center, 1123 Jackson Street, Albany, CA 94706. All are welcome.

• Take action to help our children grow up in an inclusive and welcoming community! Purchase and donate any of these books recommended by the Albany High student group, Diversify Our Narrative, and by our school librarians! These books were chosen as ones that open windows into a variety of cultures and experiences.

• Share your own used books in a book exchange. Donate a book of your own that expanded your understanding of others, and take a book that did the same for another! We hope to have United Against Hate-themed book exchanges at the Albany Library and other locations. More information will be provided.
