Albany Unified Schools Swap Spots Around the City

The Albany Unified School District, city of Albany and UC Berkeley orchestrated a collaborative plan to increase classroom space, add infant and toddler care, and improve childcare and after-school services.

Most of the moves took place over the summer.

1. The Albany Children's Center moved to a permanent home at the former MacGregor High School site, 720 Jackson St.

2. MacGregor moved to the Albany Adult School space at 601 San Gabriel Ave.

3. Albany Adult School moved to Albany High School in January 2010 and uses the space at night.

4. The Albany Unified School District administration and special education offices temporarily moved from Cornell Avenue to leased University Village space on Monroe Street; further relocation or new construction is planned for 2015.

5. Cornell Elementary School classrooms will occupy former district office space on Cornell.

6. The Albany Children's Center school-age program has relocated from University Village to Ocean View Elementary School.

7. New UC, Berkeley, infant, toddler and preschool childcare programs will open at the former Albany Children's Center site in University Village after renovations by the university.

Codornices Creek renovations have begun behind the former Albany Children's Center site.

These plans were developed to reach our collective goals to create a supportive community and family atmosphere in Albany. The proposed agreement was created by:

Albany Unified School District (Superintendent Marla Stephenson)

City of Albany (City Administrator Beth Pollard)

(UVA Community Liaison, Dara Birnbaum)
