Alpha College Prep Offers Affordable Tutoring, SAT Prep and College Consulting

Alpha College Prep opened its doors in September 2014, offering local students access to after-school tutoring, college consulting, and SAT/ACT preparation in its facility on Solano Avenue in Albany. Alpha College Prep’s business model aims to change the landscape of private tutoring in the Bay Area by providing quality services at affordable rates.

“We really are the best tutors at the best prices,” said founder Jennifer Palumbo. “We love teaching, and we would probably do it for free if we were able.”

Although there are other tutoring businesses throughout the Berkeley and Oakland areas, Alpha College Prep prides itself on serving students in many different capacities at an affordable cost. Companies like Kaplan and Princeton Review provide only test preparation services, while other private companies and individuals may focus solely on single-subject tutoring. Alpha College Prep provides all of this and more, helping students at the high school and community college levels to apply and get into college.

Alpha College Prep’s founders have worked as teachers in both the private and public sectors. Unlike those at other private tutoring companies, the tutors at Alpha College Prep are teaching professionals. By hiring experienced educators and compensating them as the professionals that they are, Alpha College Prep can maintain a staff of experts and provide high quality service.

“We are not trying to replace teachers, rather we provide another layer of academic support for kids,” said Palumbo, who has experience as a high school English teacher, “Our schools have economic constraints and political obligations. Teachers are overworked, and so are counselors. In a private setting, we can focus on a student’s individual needs. We can identify areas for improvement and focus on those areas at a student’s individual pace. We don’t have to follow a state-curriculum, leave kids behind, or hold other kids up.”

While in its beginning stages, Alpha College Prep is rolling out a series of new products, including its first group SAT class, final exams preparations sessions and academic enrichment courses.
