Bicyclist With Explosive Device Arrested In Emeryville

The man was on probation when police stopped him. No injuries were reported.

EMERYVILLE, CA — A 38-year-old bicyclist was arrested on suspicion of possessing an explosive device in Emeryville on Sunday night.

An Emeryville police officer had pulled the bicyclist over around 11 p.m. near Park Avenue and Watts Street for a traffic enforcement stop. The officer had found that the bicyclist, a Berkeley man whose name is not yet being released, was on active probation.

The officer searched the bicyclist's property and found an item that seemed to be an improvised explosive device. Officers were not able to rule out that the suspicious object as being an explosive device and contacted the Alameda County Sheriff's Office Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team (EOD) for additional assistance.

The sheriff's bomb squad responded to the scene and inspected the device. Authorities also searched for any secondary devices and deemed the surrounding area safe. There were no injuries from the device.

The bicyclist was arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of possession of an explosive device along with a probation violation.
