A Question for Parents: Early Morning Suggestions?

I am in need of some suggestions. I am a stay-at-home dad with a 2 1/2 year old son. We drop my wife off at work at eight in the morning, and I am wondering if there are things out there that I don't know about to do with my son. 

Usually, we have plenty to do, but there are those mornings when it's raining or too cold to go to a park or playground. I've found that most places such as , or , don't open until 9:30 a.m, and many businesses don't open until 10 a.m. So, there are those 1.5-2 hours where we are sort of twiddling our thumbs wondering where to go. I'd rather not turn right around and drive home if I don't have to.  

So far, I know a Trader Joe's and a that are open at eight, neither of which are places I want to spend a considerable amount of time with my son. I'm looking for places from Albany down to the northern parts of Oakland. I'm open to driving a little more in either direction, or even over to San Francisco now and then.
