Alameda County Supervisor Keith Carson Gives Keynote at 148th Sheriff’s Academy Graduation

Alameda County Supervisor Keith Carson served as keynote speaker for the 148^th Sheriff’s Academy Graduation on Monday, July 30, 2012 at the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Services in Dublin.

Twenty-five graduates, twenty three men and two women, took the oath of office. Twenty three recruits will enter the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, one recruit is headed to the Richmond Police Department, and one graduate is non-affiliated.

Supervisor Carson spoke about the history of Sheriffs in the United States and their ongoing pivotal role in modern civil society.

“As a sworn officer, you take an oath to safeguard the lives and property of the residents you serve,” Supervisor Carson noted.  “But it is also your job to earn the trust of the public,” he continued.  “Recently, some professionals like lawyers and politicians have slipped in public opinion and lost the trust of the public.  As a future law enforcement officer, it is your responsibility to ensure that your actions do not erode that trust, but rather inspire the public’s trust.”

In addition, the graduates were greeted by Sheriff Gregory Ahern and Undersheriff Richard Lucia; County Administrator Susan Muranishi was also present to support the graduates.

The 148th Academy ran from January 23, 2012 to July 30, 2012.  Graduates complete 1,064 hours of classroom and hands-on training offered in conjunction with Las Positas College, where they may also earn college credits.
