Community Organizations Gather to Encourage Working Together

Local organizations share ideas for the benefit of all

On Thursday, Jan. 31, the City of Albany hosted a gathering of representatives from various community organizations with the specific purpose of learning about and from each other.

Faith-based, service, and other community organizations serving the needs of Albany residents were in attendance. Mayor Thomsen and Assembly Member Nancy Skinner greeted the group and expressed their thanks for the good work done by community members.

After a period of both formal and informal networking, participants broke into three focus groups – fund raising and publicity, recruiting and managing volunteers, and the business side of running a nonprofit.

Large calendar pages lined the hall for recording upcoming events for each organization. A slide show of photos and information ran on a loop in the Council Chambers and many organizations displayed brochures and fliers about their programs and events.

Evaluations from attendees gave high praise to the event with this common theme, “This was great. It’s nice to find out about other organizations in Albany”. Many suggested that more similar gatherings are needed and they should be a bit longer.

The steering committee is currently evaluating options for on line sharing of information for local groups.
