Relay for Life Kick Off on Thursday, April 18

A time to celebrate, remember, and fight back

Against the backdrop of the darkening sky, lights of memory and hope draw families, friends, colleagues, and caregivers to honor those who have had cancer. This moving Luminaria ceremony at dusk is just one of 24 hours when you can be part of the Albany community’s fight for prevention, cure, and more birthdays through Relay for Life.

How do I participate in this Albany event?  What do I need to do?  What might this mean for my organization? Will I know anyone there?  What does it mean for those who have or might get cancer?

Find out at our Albany Relay Kickoff on Thursday, April 18, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Albany Bowl, 540 San Pablo Ave. Albany.  Hear from past and present participants, pick up information, enjoy refreshments, and be eligible for prizes.

Then block out some time between 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, and 10 a.m. Sunday, May 19, to connect with other residents, organizations, and this important cause.

What exactly is Relay for Life?  This signature event of the American Cancer Society is a life-changing event that helps our community celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. Each year, more than 4 million people in over 20 countries take part in this global phenomenon and raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer.

Relay for Life is:

  • Organized, overnight community fundraising walk
  • Teams of people camp out around a track
  • Members of each team take turns walking around the track
  • Food, games and activities provide entertainment and build camaraderie
  • Family-friendly environment for the entire community

Because it’s a team event, individual participants are not required to be there the entire time. But it's so much fun; you'll find it hard to leave!

Relay for Life is a way to CELEBRATE cancer survivors, honoring their courage and strength.

Relay for Life is a time to REMEMBER those lost to cancer.  The memorable luminaria ceremony honors those who have lost the battle with cancer as well as those people who have fought or are still fighting the disease.

Relay for Life encourages participants to take tangible ACTION against a disease that has taken too much.

Your reasons for getting involved in Relay For Life are as unique and special as the story that motivates you. Because of your support, we are creating a world with less cancer and more birthdays!
