Roslyn Isseks left us last weekend. The cart she pushed full of the latest hard-back mysteries will no longer clatter across the library threshold. So many unique and inspiring patrons visit Albany Library and this 95-year-old, who brought us the NYT Bestseller List snipped from the paper each week, was a real friend!
She left the city of Albany a better place, feeding people with her bread redistribution program. Of course, people don’t live by bread alone. The real food she gave us was conversation. Her life, your life, the price of avocados, were her stock in trade. Some call her the Angel of Solano Avenue, others call her mom or Roz or Rosie. The Library staff appreciated her visits and donations very much!
Ros’s daughter, Ileen Isseks, was kind enough to donate four pictures to help us celebrate her life. One shows her before the war, enjoying life on the countertop!

Some of those who visited Ros’s apartment were lucky enough to see Ileen’s art on the walls. Check out a performance of her mandolin and guitar duo sometime.
Our best thoughts go with Roslyn, out the door and down the road toward home—wherever that may be.
