What a World! Art, Magic and Music at Albany Library

Albany Library celebrates Art Is Education Month during March 2013.

There were no witches melting into pointed hats, but the month of March left library staff saying, "What a world, what a world!" March was betwitching from start to finish--with art, magic and music for everyone.

The library once again became a local art gallery for student art. 3rd and 5th graders from Marin and 1st Graders from Cornell shared Hearts, a Space Zoo, and Colored Squares.

Artists gathered for several crafts programs: Mandala Paper Quilt with Violet Juno, Recycled Book Sculptures with Marion Coleman and Origami Paper Crafts with Margo Wecksler.

Adults and young people made jewelry, knitted and sang their hearts out at weekly sing-alongs. Music lovers heard the Celtic songs of Chris Waltz and Shawna Spiteri (guitar, whistles and harp).

Urban Sketcher, Cathy McAuliffe, explained this world-wide phenomenon to the audience of our Brown Bag speaker's forum. This was followed by a short sketch-crawl in the library.

Late in the Month the Friends of the Library held a booksale that netted $2058 to support all the wonderful programs described above. And on March 30, Magical Nathaniel returned to the library for the Art of Magic, a show weaving card tricks, ring spinning, humor and--best of all--confetti!
