What Are Your Priorities?

Cathy Hanville, LCSW, an Albany psychotherapists, writes about figuring out and acting on the priorities in your life.

More than once as I drive to work I see a person in a nearby car multi-tasking.  I have seen texting, talking, putting on make-up, and reading to name a few activities. This sends a message that these drivers have decided that their activities are more important than both their safety and the safety of others on the road. I would guess that if you asked these drivers that they would say that safety was one of their top priorities. However, there lack of consciousness in making decisions shows something different.

Why is it that we act in ways that are not congruent with what we say our priorities are?  Why do we say our family is our priority and then not spend enough time with them?  Why do we say we want to be healthy but not behave in ways that would make us so? Part of it is that we assume that things will be as they always are. Our kids will always be young, our spouses there for us, and our health always good.

I encourage each of you to try and be more present and conscious of the decisions you make and what they say about your priorities. If your priority is your family then own that and act in ways that show that don’t just play lip service to that. None of us knows what the future brings. Value your present in concrete ways.
