Welcome back Albany Trick-or-Treaters!

While we are still practicing safety protocols due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Alameda County Public Health has provided guidance that trick-or-treating for the Halloween holiday is generally a safe activity (see more information on the County Public Health website at covid-19.acgov.org).

To help welcome back our Albany Trick-or-Treaters, the Albany Police Department will be doing their annual glow stick giveaway on City streets during the trick or treating hours. Each year the department is out and about with the community on Halloween to hand out glowsticks to help children safely find their way through City streets in search of treats as one of the many community engagement programs the department provides. The police department has also prepared the following safety tips for all members of our community:

Trick-Or-Treaters:

  • Make sure to bring a flashlight and a cell phone
  • Plan out the route for trick-or-treating ahead of time and pick well-lit streets
  • Only cross the street at corners or crosswalks, and don’t  cross between cars or in the middle of the block
  • Only approach houses that are well-lit
  • Never enter a stranger’s home and never accept rides from strangers
  • Wait until you arrive home to sort, check and eat your treats
  • Trick-or-treat in groups preferably with an adult

Adult and Parents:

  • Make sure the path to your door is clean and well-lit for trick-or-treaters
  • Inspect all candy treats before eating

Motorists:

  • Drive extra carefully in neighborhoods, looking out for children who may not be looking out for you
  • Do not drive while wearing bulky costumes
  • Enter and exit driveways and alleys very carefully

Helpful Crime Prevention Information:

  • Stay aware, vigilant and observant of those around you
  • Show confidence and trust your instincts
  • If possible, don’t walk alone after dark
  • Be cautious when carrying valuables  - keep hidden and/or secured
  • If alcohol is a part of your Halloween celebration, designate a driver or plan alternate mode of transportation

On Halloween Night, Albany Police Officers will be out in the neighborhoods handing out free Glow Sticks to Trick-or-Treaters!
