Farmers Market Fate Could Be Decided Tuesday

The Planning & Zoning Commission will discuss the market's 2012 permit tonight.

City commissioners will once again hear from community members about the Albany farmers market, and could decide tonight whether to renew the market's permit for 2012. 

Market organizer The Ecology Center said the item is scheduled to be heard by the Planning & Zoning Commission, which meets at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall.

A handful of local businesses and residents have said in another location.

Their concerns were met with a large degree of sympathy coupled with a wave of support from others who said the market was successful in its 2011 spot on Solano Avenue just west of San Pablo Avenue.

As of late February, the city had not been able to identify another suitable location in Albany because of numerous health and safety requirements necessitated by the event.

Community Development Director Jeff Bond said, following a about the market's uncertain future, the city received roughly 40 letters, the majority of which expressed support for the Albany farmers market.
