Journey through the many different regions of Brazil without leaving Albany! In the 14th century the land of Brazil was occupied and colonized by the Portuguese, who brought over enslaved Africans of various tribes of West Africa to labor the lands once only inhabited by various indigenous tribes of the Americas. Brazil’s territory is vast, and with each region, there is a unique culture that influences the dance and music produced from them. Come learn and dance to the many different genres of music from these different regions and learn the styles of dance that go along with them. With the base of Brazil’s national dance “Samba” you will learn to dance Samba Reggae, Samba de Roda, Axé, Pagode, Funk (funk-ee), and movements of the Orixás. No experience necessary. Movements can be tailored to your comfort level of workout. Wear comfortable work-out clothes, bring water, and a towel.
About the Instuctor: Elisita is a Bay Area Native who has lived and studied in Salvador, Bahia—Brazil. For 12 years she has danced, taught, and performed with Ginga Brasil under the direction of Conceição Damasceno, as well as other professional dancers from different regions of Brazil.
