First Person Singular's HOOT!: REGIFTING: Songs My Mother (or Some Other) Gave Me

Like silverware, clothes, and keepsakes, songs are passed on to loved ones for practical use. We need songs to articulate the pain in our hearts, guide us through moments of confusion, walk us through revolutions. When you teach somebody a song, you're handing them a tool. When you burn somebody a playlist or buy them an album, you're handing them a box of tools. Our next HOOT! celebrates gifts of song given by big brothers, girlfriends, and hippie parents. Whether it's "This Land is Your Land," "Up on the Roof," or "My Yiddishe Momme," come pass on the songs that were passed on to you, and give somebody a hammer they never had.

Hosted by Joe Christiano and Theresa Kelly

THE RULES
Cover songs only! (And covering your Aunt Tillie doesn't count).*
1 to 2 songs per performer.
Quick set-up. Small amps are okay, but HOOT! is essentially unplugged.
A piano will be available. Apart from that, bring your own ukelele.
No "sing and scram." Every performer deserves an audience, and HOOT! is designed to be a group effort.
You may perform solo, duo, small group, a capella, instrumental - however you see fit.
$3 (or what you can afford) in the hat for all attendees - performing and non.
* Original songs are occasionally permitted, but must be credited in performance to Paul Anka.

Use the link below, and in the webpage comment field include your name (or stage name), the song(s) you'd like to perform, and any short-and-sweet biographical info that would help us introduce you. We will try to accommodate everyone, but slots are limited. If you choose a song that has already been taken, you will be asked to submit another. Once a full program is established, a playing order will be emailed to all participants. Thanks for visiting, and let's HOOT!

ABOUT HOOT!
First Person Singular complements its regular series with a monthly, musical, open mic based on a theme. A new take on the traditional hootenanny, HOOT! delves into the entirety of popular song - our modern folk inheritance - in programs that highlight our perennial concerns: love, cars, money, summer, and pitching wang dang doodles. We'll celebrate the singular songbooks of select artists, and create living mix-tapes out of myriad sub-genres. Ready for new experiment in collective performance? Then sign up and get in the act! It'll be a HOOT!

Come sing or just come for the show!
