Sosakete is an award-winning Mohawk potter who revived the lost art of his tribal pottery that had not been made for over 400 years. His name means "He who carries the Corn" and, true to his Mohawk namesake, he recreated the 4000 year old ancient art form of traditional Mohawk pottery.
Raw clay is gathered from the earth. An offering is made. The clay is then cleaned and various tempers are added. Each pot is pinched, coiled and traditionally fired outside using hardwoods.
Sosakete is of the Mohawk Nation, Bear Clan, and has been working with clay since 1994. His goal was to revive the tradition of Mohawk pottery as it was made and used prior to the introduction of Dutch trade pots in the 1660s. He has won numerous awards for his pottery including First Place in the traditional category at the Eiteljorg Indian Market in Indiana.
