You are invited to join us for this special evening with two Akwesasne Mohawk brothers, Roger Sosakete Perkins and Kenny Perkins. They will be sharing their traditional songs and will have CDs available for purchase.
The Drum is the central instrument used in Mohawk song and dance. Mohawk people consider the drum's beat to be the heartbeat of mother earth. The songs and dances can described as gratitude in motion. This is how humans have celebrated life for millenia nd the most exciting way to offer respect to the universe and all living things. The Mohawk have songs for everything. The most ancient song they have is for all female life. They call it the woman's shuffle dance. This song was created out of an unconditional love for grandmothers, mothers and daughters, and the great power of life nurturing energies. There are thanksgiving songs for every occasion and every living thing. In Mohawk traditional social gatherings everyone is encouraged to participate to add their specific and individual energy to the larger whole to creat as big a thanks as possible.
