ANNA O. FISHER & DEREK MONG: Poetry, Prose, and Translations
Anne O. Fisher's award-winning translations of comic and culturally illuminating prose by Ilya Ilf and Evgeny Petrov have been praised for their fidelity to the texts and to the authors' nuanced humor and social satire. Now Fisher will read from her recently published translation of Ilf and Petrov's satirical novel, The Twelve Chairs (Northwestern Press). Written in 1928, The Twelve Chairs continues to be one of Russia's most popular novels and has inspired several movies, including the 1970 American comedy by Mel Brooks.

Derek Mong will read poems from Other Romes (Saturnalia Books, 2011). The collection draws from Mong's admiration for the films of Fellini and his background as a classics scholar. Linda Gregerson writes, "from the Latin masters, Mong has learned the art of impeccable understatement...which simultaneously breaks one's heart and fills it with astonishment....From later masters...the art of flight." The result is a collection "so masterful, so mindful."
Together, Fisher and Mong will read from The Joyous Science: Selected Poems of Maxim Amelin, their collaborative translation-in-progress supported by an NEA Grant for Literary Translation. Moscow poet Maxim Amelin (b. 1970) is hailed as the pre-eminent voice of post-Soviet Russian verse.
