Cançonièr offers a perfect complement to its acclaimed Black Dragon program: music from the age of the infamous “blood countess,” Elizabeth Bathory, a Hungarian noblewoman accused of all manner of crimes, the most infamous of which was bathing in the blood of murdered servants and peasants in the belief that this would keep her eternally young. The truth is unclear, and there is evidence that she was innocent of many of the atrocities of which she was accused, but her ghastly legend has endured through the centuries, rivaling that of Vlad Dracula.
Music of the Habsburg Court, songs of Sebestyan Tinodi, Balkan and Romany folk songs, Ottoman pieces, and Italian music of the Bathory Court.
