Former Inmates To Benefit From $100 Million In Funding

The money is aimed at helping released prisoners gain access to employment, housing, education and other opportunities.

ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA — Political leaders in Alameda County have a new plan aimed at helping formerly incarcerated individuals regain access to employment, housing, education and other opportunities.

A series of events will take place this month. The events are for formerly incarcerated individuals or those with
felony convictions seeking re-entry services, such as job training, housing assistance and opportunities to reduce or expunge old felony convictions on their criminal records under voter-approved Proposition 47 from 2014.

The events are funded through $103 million in Proposition 47 savings grants.

The proposition reduced the penalty for six low-level, non-violent crimes from a felony to a misdemeanor. The subsequent savings will be reallocated to community-based prevention programs like drug and mental health treatment.
