Letter: Raised Beds Raise Spirits at Children's Center
There's a new business in town devoted to building raised garden beds. One teacher took a moment to thank its owner and the local funding group that paid for materials for the project.
[Albany Patch would love your 300-word letters to the editor. .]
I work at the and have recently completed a garden project in the courtyard attached to my classroom. I received a grant from the to beautify my courtyard.
I solicited the help of one of my students' parents, Dan McDunn, who has his own business, My Own Harvest, which can be reached at 510-590-8461. He specializes in creating raised garden beds to fit any space.

He created a plan for the space, purchased the materials for me and then volunteered his labor to complete the project. I then was able to have volunteer parents help me fill the beds with soil. The end result is beautiful.
We have two garden beds on either side of a custom bench along one wall in my courtyard. My students have planted marigolds, daisies, impatiens and lima beans that they started themselves from seeds.

The courtyard has been greatly enhanced by this project. My students love to go out and stand on the bench to see into the main yard of our center, or help water our garden.
It is so wonderful to have the opportunity to use an outdoor space on a regular basis with young children. I am so grateful for Dan's help, and to the Albany Education Fund for giving me the grant.
Thank you,
