Open Letter: Parent "Very Concerned" About Freshman Friday Hazing

One local parent sent this message to two Albany schools principals following egging incidents last week, and said we could share it on Albany Patch. How do you speak with your kids about hazing and safety issues? Tell us in the comments.

Dear Mr. Parenti and Mr. Barone,

Our son attends AMS as an 8th grader. We also have two children at Ocean View (4th and 1st grades) and our youngest will start Kindergarten next year. We are very involved at each school and in the Albany community.

Last night our son told us that he had as he was walking home from school with his friend. He doesn't know who threw it; only that it came from a car driving down San Pablo Ave.

While we are not a high school family yet, about this Freshman Friday hazing ritual that seems to have picked up again already this year. He isn't even a high schooler and he is being affected by this. This is totally unacceptable. We don't want to see this escalate into situations like last year where students are being harassed at the parks, bus stops, walking along Solano Ave and even ending up in the hospital.

Is this the image we want portrayed of Albany schools? We would like to know what is being done to keep this from happening in the future. We are more than willing to meet with you to try and tackle this on going problem and make Albany a safe place for all kids to be.
