Pi Day: Good Excuse to Eat a Homonym in Albany

Math and dessert enjoyed a happy marriage at Albany High School on Thursday, thanks to the not-quite-official holiday known as Pi Day.

The day is meant to focus attention on Pi, an unending number beginning with 3.14 designating the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter.

It's also the annual occasion for the math club at Albany High to stage their fundraiser selling slices of pie to help support the club's travel expenses to math competitions, the club's co-president, junior Catherine Li, told Patch.

Each slice, a sixth of a pie, was two dollars.

The pies were made by club members at a pie party at the home of one of the members, said one of the pie vendors, freshman Janice Shiu.

A Patch reporter covering the event found himself seized by a sudden craving to help support the club's activities but was unsure what flavor to purchase: Dutch apple, banana cream, lemon meringue or pumpkin. 

He asked Shiu for a recommendation.

"I'd say the apple," she said.

It was an excellent recommendation.
