Planning Commission: Getting Your (Own) Goat

The Albany Planning and Zoning Commission will look at potential regulations for the keeping of goats within the city at tonight's meeting.

The The Albany Planning and Zoning Commission will look at potential regulations for the keeping of goats within the city at tonight's meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. in the City Hall council chambers, 1000 San Pablo Ave.

The goat issue is toward the end of tonight's commission agenda.

City staff members say in a report to the commission, "We created an ordinance that we believe is best suited to the Albany community that would like to propose:

"A person shall be allowed to keep a total of three or fewer miniature female or neutered male dehorned goats in addition to goat babies up to 4 months old. The design of the proposed housing shall provide a safe and humane facility for the goats as described in subsection 10-2.1./1

"If a city official determines that the keeper is allowing such animals to roam at large, or is not keeping such animals in a clean and sanitary condition, free of vermin, obnoxious smells and substances, then the City shall have grounds to revoke the permit."

The commission is not expected to take action on goats tonight other than providing direction to city staff on a possible goat ordinance.
