Saint Mary's Gives Back
The Saint Mary's High community continues its long tradition of community support and service with gifts of hair, meals, and canned goods.
Community service in support of local charitable organizations is a long-standing tradition for the Saint Mary’s High community, and 2015 has already seen a number of ”gifting” projects take place. On February 17, twenty students donated long ponytails in the school’s annual “Making the Cut” hair-gifting event. Three stylists traveled again this year from their Napa salon to donate their time to cut and style. School holidays will generally find members of the Saint Mary’s community volunteering at local sites. A group helped out at the Alameda County Community Food Bank on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in January, and on Presidents’ Day, a group served nearly 200 meals at the Berkeley Catholic Worker. Not least, the extended school community gave back to itself in a big way at the annual Crab Feed on February 7, with more than 600 people - alumni, families, friends, and crab lovers - enjoying a delicious meal and good company in the school gym in support of school programs. The annual event, sponsored by the Parent Association, features great raffle and auction prizes. One of the winners is pictured with a group of student hosts who worked the room that evening selling raffle tickets! The annual Lenten Food Drive got underway on Ash Wednesday, and students will fill containers from the Food Bank many times over before Easter.
