Last week The Fuse Fitness invited Patch readers to join the 21-day sugar detox. The post included a quiz to test your knowledge of sugar and its consumption in America. Here are the answers you have been waiting for.How Much Sugar?
Two hundred years ago, the average American ate only two pounds of sugar a year. In 1970, we ate 123 pounds of sugar per year.
Today, the average American consumes almost 152 pounds of sugar in one year. This is equal to 3 pounds (or 6 cups) of sugar consumed in one week.
Ideally, we should be consuming only 6 teaspoons of sugar a day for women and only 9 teaspoons for men.
The major source of sugar for most people is soda; one can of pop has 11 teaspoons of sugar. Many of us consume processed foods, like ketchup and peanut butter that usually contain sugar or sugar-like products.
How Much to Work Off the Sugar?
To work off the calories of one cup of ice cream you would need to briskly walk for 60 minutes. Think about that before you indulge. Either cut back on consumption or get ready to work it off.
