Capistrano Valley High School Students Rally to Reduce Waste on Campus
School Unveils New Refillable Water Stations Aimed at Reducing Waste

Capistrano Unified School District officials, students, Parent Teacher Association members, and Waste Management of Orange County representatives, held a ribbon cutting ceremony unveiling two new refillable water stations on campus of Capistrano Valley High School.
Two senior class students, Samantha Carroll and Kayla Tresser sparked the installation of the two stations as they sought to enhance waste reduction on campus by encouraging their peers to use reusable water bottles.
“Our school is very proud of these young ladies who took initiative to identify a problem, find a solution, and pursue it to its end,” said Joshua Hill, principal of Capistrano Valley. “This is the spirit that we hope to cultivate in all of our students who will someday leave our campus to go into the real world and resolve tomorrow’s concerns.”

Carrol and Tresser presented their idea to the PTA and to the Orange County Waste Management team resulting in a co-sponsorship by the two.
“These new on-campus refillable water stations represent a student movement that personifies a generation considered the most sustainability conscious generation yet,” added Amy Hanacek, President of Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees.

The stations are equipped with a digital count display of the number of plastic bottles saved. Together, students and school officials seek to reduce waste on campus by saving a minimum of 35,000 plastic bottles by June 30, 2016.
“We applaud these local students for their green actions to promote waste reduction on campus,” said Chip Monaco, market manager for Waste Management of Orange County. “As an environmental services provider in Orange County, we take educating our future student leaders seriously, and that’s why we were honored to play a small role in helping them in their efforts to take care of the environment.”
In addition to the co-sponsoring of the stations, Waste Management provided all students with a reusable water bottle to help jump start their green efforts.
