Local College Hoops Games Are Hidden Gem

This weekend a working father will spend his Saturday with psychotic balls of energy called children. He is exhausted from his 40 hour work week and wants to relax and mindlessly watch television all day.

But nope. His stay at home wife deserves a day to herself to recharge the battery. He takes his kids out for the day so the wife can enjoy peace and quiet.

What will he do with these nightmare children who won't sit still? He will likely take them out to eat and beg them to stop yelling because people are staring. He will probably go to a movie theater and pray that there is a Pixar or Disney animated film his kids haven't already seen and memorized the lines.

Instead of having to sit through Frozen for the seventh time or another dreadful Madagascar flick, take them to a local college basketball game.

Odds are you have a son you desperately want to enjoy sports. Or a daughter who is a natural athlete. Instead of sitting in a dark room watching cartoons with giant heads sing about snowmen go watch a basketball game.

Tickets to these events are relatively cheap. You can take your whole family to a game and dinner for 50 bucks. These local games rarely sell out and the arenas are small so getting good seats will not be an issue. You can honestly sit wherever you want regardless of where your ticket is at most of these games.

There are options too. I highly recommend UC Irvine games or Cal State Fullerton games. UCI plays at the Bren Events Center which is a highly underrated basketball venue. It is the second best Big West basketball venue behind the Long Beach Pyramid. UCI is a nice campus and it's a great family experience.

CSUF is a little further, just off the 57 freeway. The arena is a lot smaller than most college basketball arenas but there are usually great seats available for cheap.

You may be thinking, "Michael this is all well and good. But college kids are drunk and rowdy. I don't want my kids to be hearing bad language from these hooligans."

First of all, good use of the word hooligans. It is a word that is far too underused. Second, these games are very tame. They have student sections and they get loud sometimes but it's usually entertaining and never vulgar.

So instead of begging your kids to be quiet so you can enjoy a meal or movie, take them to a sporting event where being loud is encouraged.
