Steve Jobs: A Gifted Man Who Shared His Gifts With the World
My thoughts on Mr. Jobs and his contribution to modern society.

Two hundred years ago the world’s primary mode of transportation was the horse; our constitution was signed with a feather, dipped in ink; injured soldiers were often treated with a rusty saw; and, the primary source of energy was fire. To our great benefit, over the last 200 years, mankind has seen more technological advancement than all of previous human history combined. We traded horse power for rocket power, the plume for the Smartphone, the saw for the MRI, and fire has been replaced with lithium batteries and photovoltaic cells.
Man’s command over his environment continues to increase exponentially as the machines we create participate in our invention, and in the middle of the steepest part of our growth curve, one man managed to stand out from within a crowd of geniuses. Pagers, fax machines, cell phones, VCRs then DVDs, boom boxes and the Walkman, the Compact Disc and video game consoles have ALL changed the way we live; but, one man’s vision to put a “personal computer” in every home, has done more to revolutionize our world than all of these amazing inventions combined.
Steve Jobs changed the world by making computing power available to common people. The Apple Macintosh fundamentally changed who manufacturers and software programmers developed product for. The result… there are more computers in the US than citizens. Most Americans carry a personal computer in their phones and if you want to talk about a McIntosh apple (great for pies and cider) you’ll likely have to clearly distinguish your reference to the fruit and not your laptop. But amidst his many, many innovations, is perhaps his most enduring contribution, the GUI (Graphic User Interface,) which has fundamentally transformed what we expect to see on a computer screen.

October 5h 2011, Steve Jobs lost his 7 year battle with pancreatic cancer. As his obituary so elegantly stated, “Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.”
