New York Drive to Get Temporary 9/11 Memorial Signs

The Pasadena Star-News reports that John McDannel, a Pasadena resident who has sought county and Altadena Town Council approval for a permanent memorial, has persuaded Pasadena officials to put up temporary memorial signs on the road.

The Pasadena Star-News reported on Monday that the Pasadena stretch of New York Drive east of Altadena Drive will have temporary signs memorializing Sept. 11 victims installed in time for next month's 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

The main backer of the projected, retired pilot and Pasadena resident John McDannel, appeared in June at the Altadena Town Council meeting to try to persuade the Town Council to back a permanent installation at the border entrance to Altadena.

McDannel's proposal would have led to signs with "Welcome to Altadena" on one side, and a 9/11 memorial message on the other.

The Town Council voted at its July meeting to advocate to the county that the signs be solely dedicated to welcoming people to Altadena and not serve any other purpose.

According to the Star-News, McDannel will continue to advocate for his full proposed project, which includes the permanent memorial signs and creating a park in a flood control area in the Eaton wash area adjacent to New York Drive.

Regarding Altadena's plans to install a "Welcome to Altadena" sign, the Town Council has since formed a committee to look at designs.
