Today's riddle: What is the difference between a jeweler and a jailer? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Does Anaheim Need an Ordinance to Crack Down on Seedy Motels, Liquor Stores and Abandoned Buildings? (voiceofoc.org) — Anaheim city leaders are moving toward a new "chronic nuisance property" ordinance aimed at problem motels, liquor stores and abandoned buildings, especially along Beach Boulevard. Supporters say it would let the city fine owners of properties that generate repeated police calls, while some council members and business owners worry it could be abused by disgruntled neighbors or duplicate existing enforcement tools.
2. 70 Years Ago Today, Disney Celebrated the Official Grand Opening of the Disneyland Hotel (cordcuttersnews.com) — Seventy years ago, Anaheim marked the grand opening of the Disneyland Hotel, with Walt Disney, the city's mayor, and Hollywood stars on hand to celebrate. The story traces how the hotel beside Disneyland evolved through major renovations into today's three-tower resort that still anchors Anaheim's tourism economy and keeps guests immersed in Disney history steps from the park.
3. Hurry! 2027 Salute to Excellence Awards nominations due Aug. 31 (verticalavi.org) — Anaheim is set to host VERTICON 2027 next March, where VAI will present its Salute to Excellence Awards honoring standout contributors in vertical aviation. Nominations for 11 categories, from air ambulance to safety and flight instruction, are open through Aug. 31, 2026, giving local aviation professionals and organizations a chance to be recognized on a global stage.
4. Saint Mary's nurses in Reno to join 1-day strike across 3 states (rgj.com subscription) — Nurses at West Anaheim Medical Center will join a coordinated one-day strike with colleagues in Reno and Redding, pressing parent company Prime Healthcare for safer staffing and a fair contract. Organizers say high turnover and heavy patient loads are hurting care, while hospital leaders criticize the timing amid wildfire-related pressures and insist operations will continue during the walkout.
5. Guardians score twice in ninth to sweep Angels (statenews.net) — Baseball fans in Anaheim saw the Angels lose a 3-0 lead as the Cleveland Guardians rallied for a 4-3 win Wednesday afternoon at Angel Stadium, completing a three-game sweep. A late ninth-inning surge, capped by a sacrifice fly, extended Cleveland's winning streak to seven and deepened the Angels' current skid.
