Our Library Is Busier Than Ever—But Support Is Shrinking

With rising demand and falling funds, FOAL urges residents to support the Antioch Library through memberships, donations, and volunteer help

The Friends of the Antioch Library (FOAL) held their final book sale of the year from November 13 to 15. As always, the event was powered by dedicated volunteers—those who set up tables, sorted thousands of books, ran the cashier stations, and warmly assisted shoppers throughout the three-day event.

But behind the teamwork and optimism, this sale revealed a troubling trend.

Thursdays—our traditional members-only early-access day—are usually vibrant and full of energy. This year, heavy rain kept many supporters home, leading to a sharp drop in sales. Friday and Saturday followed the same pattern. And this isn’t an isolated dip: book sale revenue has been steadily declining since May.

Unfortunately, the decline is happening at the very moment our community needs us most.

The Antioch Library is experiencing a surge in visitors, full program rooms, and increased demand for resources and services. Yet FOAL’s ability to financially support these programs is being stretched thinner each month. When book sale revenue falls, so does our capacity to fund essential materials, programs, and improvements that make the library a welcoming place for learning, creativity, and connection.
